FIRST PAGES

A Workshop for Beginning Writers

If there's a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.  ~Toni Morrison

The Krane & AE District Presents:

First Pages: A Workshop for Beginning Writers

Have you had an idea running around your head for a novel, or a short story; a piece of creative non-fiction, or a memoir, but you just haven’t gotten around to writing it? Do you already have a piece of fiction or non-fiction that needs the careful eyes of outside readers? Or, have you always wanted to take a writing class, but didn’t want to enroll for a whole semester? Then, this workshop is for you.

First Pages is a One Month Writer’s Workshop that meets once a week every Monday afternoon from 6:30-8:30pm, from Jan 3-24.

What you’ll Get: You will learn the basics of Crafting Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. You will learn how to start writing, and, most importantly, how to keep writing. You will learn technique and you will acquire a toolbox of skills to set you on your writing path.  You will not have to buy any books – all texts will be provided by the instructor. You will receive week-long assignments and there will be online discussions during the week, if you wish to participate in them. The instructor will also be there for you outside of the workshop as well as inside, if you so desire.

Every writer will have a chance to be workshopped within the course of the month. You will receive one-on-one critiques and you will provide critiques for other writers.

This workshop can be mellow if you want it to be or it can be intensive. That part is up to you. This is not a “class” – it’s an open forum workshop. If you simply need outsiders to read your work, to be workshopped – then that’s okay. If you want to really get your hands dirty – then that’s good too. This will be a mixed group and the instructor will focus on your individual needs.

There will be published, guest writers that visit the workshop as well.

The course will be led by Vanessa Garcia who has taught intro to creative writing at The University of Miami; Johns Hopkins CTY program; Miami Dade Community College, among other colleges, universities, high schools and institutions. She is also a freelance writer for various publications including The Miami Herald; The Miami New Times; The Art Basel Magazine, Miami.com, NYArts Magazine, as well as numerous other journals and publications. In 2008, she was one of four Literature Finalists, worldwide, in the Rolex Mentor Protege Arts Initiative. For more info about the instructor please see: www.vanessagarcia.org
